One Year After Kirtland Temple Purchase, LDS Church Acquires Community of Christ Membership In Record-Breaking $550M Deal

Image description

INDEPENDENCE, MOAfter a year and some change, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints struck another big deal with the Community of Christ, its "much poorer, not as cool, and definitely not as pretty stepsister", according to a Church spokesperson. Last year's deal was announced on March 5, 2024. The $192M sale included The Kirtland Temple, Smith Family Homestead, Mansion House, Red Brick Store, Joseph Smith Translation manuscripts, “Caractors” document, and letters and portraits of Joseph and Emma Smith.

The most recent exchange took place last Friday, on August 1, 2025. Instead of properties and memorabilia of historical significance however, another kind of asset was on the table: The Community of Christ's own membership. The price? A jaw-dropping, dagger-dulling $550M. An anonymous Community of Christ ecclesiastical leader who helped negotiate the deal was willing to discuss some of the details with us. "Obviously, our members are people, and people are priceless. It's impossible to place a monetary value on human life, so we just blurted out a really big number. It worked. With 250,000 members, that adds up to $2,200 per person, roughly the price of a well-loved, twenty-year-old car, so we feel pretty good about it." When asked what their plans for using the money were, they mentioned "possibly relocating our Headquarters to the Hamptons or something".

A representative from the LDS Church was unwilling to share any details of the sale, but they and two hulking chaperones with gold chains could be seen unloading and handing off briefcases full of cash. We attempted to ask the LDS Church rep how the Church planned to integrate newcomers from the Community of Christ, but one of our interns was picked up and thrown across the parking lot by these scary thugs.
